Hiawatha Belt Blanket
This blanket features the Hiawatha belt of the Five Nations of the Iroquois Confederacy. (Seneca, Caygua, Onondaga, Oneida, and Mohawk) The Tuscarora Nation had joined in 1722, making the Iroquois 6 Nations. In the founding of the Hodinöhsö:ni’ (Iroquois) Confederacy, Dekanawidah along with the Five Nations Confederate Chiefs planted the Tree of Peace in the Onondaga Nation. The Onondaga were named as The Firekeepers. The Senecas refer to themselves as the Onöndawa:ga’ or the Keepers of the Western Door. Also featured on the blanket is the word Hodinöhsö:ni’ meaning people of the longhouse.
