Corn Wash Basket

Made by Robin Lazore of the Mohawk Nation. These types of baskets have been made any used by Haudenosuanee people for centuries.

Corn Washing Baskets are made so that the nature of the weave is loose. This type of weave permitted the corn, after cooking with wood ashes, to be dipped into a stream to wash away ashes and the outer hulls of corn kernels. The loose weave allows the water to flow freely through the basket.

Today’s Uses: Traditional method for corn washing, home decor, storage for important items, washing greens and other plants, collection.
