In the founding of the Hodinöhsö:ni’ (Iroquois) Confederacy, Dekanawidah along with the Five Nations Confederate Chiefs planted the Tree of Peace in the Onondaga Nation. The Onondaga were named as The Firekeepers. This ever-growing Tree Belt symbolizes the infinite existence of The Hodinöhsö:ni’ (Iroquois) Confederacy. It was displayed in the confederate councils and was meant to protect the Council and to keep the eyes of the 50 chiefs free from dust or harmful thoughts. It was also displayed whenever the League Constitution was recited. The scarf is a way of remembering its origins as well as a reminder to think in a good way.
  • The Two Row Wampum Scarf is based on the design of the The Two Row Wampum belt which recorded an agreement between the Hodinöhsö:ni’ and Dutch in 1613. The purple rows running the length of a wampum belt represent the ways of the Hodinöhsö:ni’ and their way of life, laws, and the other purple row represents the non-natives and their ways. It was agreed that each will travel down the river of life side by side. Neither will attempt to steer the other’s vessel or interfere in their matters. The Hodinöhsö:ni’ and the Dutch agreed on three principles to make this treaty last. The first was friendship; the Hodinöhsö:ni’ and their non-native brothers would live in friendship. The second principle is peace; there will be peace between the two peoples. The final principle is forever, this will be everlasting. The Dutch recorded this agreement on paper with three silver chains. They chose not to use iron chains because iron rusts and over time will break. Silver, however, can be polished and renewed. Both sides agreed to call this the Silver Covenant Chain of Friendship. After the Dutch turned their colony over to the British, the British honored the stipulations of the belt and the principles therein. The Hodinöhsö:ni’ view the Two Row Wampum as a living treaty; and affirm that this agreement established the Hodinöhsö:ni’ the right to live in peace and that each nation will respect the ways of the other.
